Torino midfielder Alexander Farnerud is expected to be sidelined for at least six months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The former Sweden international suffered the injury during training on Saturday and his worst fears were confirmed after an MRI scan revealed he had ruptured his ACL. A statement from Torino read: "Alexander Farnerud will undergo reconstructive surgery on Wednesday afternoon in Turin."

Farnerud, 31, suffered the same injury 13 months ago and went under the knife. He returned to action on 26 October and has made 21 league appearances since for Torino. His absence comes as a blow to Giampiero Ventura's ninth-placed side, who have an outside chance of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

They are five points adrift of sixth-place Genoa with two games remaining. The top six teams in Serie A qualify for European football next season. Il Toro play away to AC Milan on Sunday and end the campaign at home to Cesena on 31 May.
