Spanish La Liga newcomers Las Palmas have sacked coach Paco Herrera just eight games into their first season in the top flight for 13 years. A 4-0 defeat to Getafe on Sunday left the side from the Canary Islands a point off the bottom of the table with just one win so far this season.

"Las Palmas have decided to sack first team coach, Paco Herrera, and his assistant, Angel Rodriguez after the defeat suffered in the eighth game of La Liga against Getafe (4-0), conscious of the need to look for a stimulus," the club said in a statement on their official website.

Herrera, who worked as assistant to Rafael Benitez at Liverpool for two years between 2004 and 2006, led Las Palmas to promotion as recently as June through the play-offs.

"Las Palmas thank Paco Herrera for his dedication, professionalism, effort, loyalty and cordiality from the first day that he took charge of the team," the statement continued. "We wish him all the best in his future professional career, aware that he leaves having written one of the happiest days in the history books of our club, the promotion to the First Division."

Shortly after the announcement, the club took to Twitter to announce Quique Setien as Herrera's replacement.
