Young female footballers in Australia’s remote north were the beneficiaries recently as the first-ever FIFA Live Your Goals festival was held in Darwin.
An impressive turn-out of over 200 young players were greeted by national team stars Lydia Williams and Lisa De Vanna – both key players in Australia’s recent run to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ quarter-finals.
The national team pair had the opportunity to visit local schools in the 'top end', before hosting a day-long session at the Darwin Football Stadium. Darwin has a notable indigenous population making Williams’ presence especially poignant, being one of two current Aboriginal players in the Matildas squad, along with Kyah Simon.
Equally the starry-eyed aspirants enjoyed the presence of arguably the Matildas most famous identity - national team skipper De Vanna.
“It’s so important for me to be involved in these festivals as I relish the opportunity to give back to the grassroots, as it meant the world to me when I was able to meet my idols as a young footballer,” said De Vanna.
The festival was made possible through FIFA funding in conjunction with a FIFA Goal Project, and with the support of the Northern Territory Football Federation.
