Japan’s FIFA Women’s World Cup™-winning coach Norio Sasaki has had his contract renewed, further extended a role he has held since 2008.

Sasaki, one of ten names announced recently in the shortlist for FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s Football, led Japan to this year’s Women’s World Cup Final in Canada.

Sasaki’s tenure has been headlined by their unexpected crowning as world champions at Germany 2011. The following year the Nadeshiko won the silver medal at the London Olympics, and were crowned Asian champions for the first time in 2014.

Sasaki’s new contract term is undisclosed.

The Japan FA have also announced an international match for the Nadeshiko against the Netherlands in Volendam on 29 November, which will be the team’s first activity since August’s EAFF East Asian Cup.

“This will be the new start for us to develop the team for the Olympic Games in Rio,” said Sasaki, referencing Asia’s qualifying tournament to be held in February and March next year.

“It is such a great opportunity to play against one of the strongest opponents, Netherlands. They are organised, are tall and have skilful players in the offence. We want to try and see how we can do at this moment after examining our play in the World Cup.”
