While Germany’s champions have already been crowned, the contenders for second place are locked in a tense battle that will only be resolved on the last day of the season. Meanwhile, in the land of the world champions, Washington were pegged back for the first time in this campaign while the picture remains unchanged in Sweden. FIFA.com brings you all the latest women’s football news from around the world.
USA: No winners in top-of-the-table clash between Washington and PortlandLeague leaders Washington Spirit dropped points for the first time this season after three successive wins. Just like their latest opponents Portland Thorns, however, they remain unbeaten after the encounter between the NWSL’s top two sides ended goalless. The teams contested a finely balanced match in front of a 4,333-strong crowd, with a goal from Crystal Dunn ruled out for offside. Portland then had to survive the final two minutes of the game without Tobin Heath after the midfielder was sent off for two yellow-card offences.
Elsewhere, Chicago Red Stars climbed above Portland in the table as Christen Press’ strike handed them a narrow 1-0 win over Boston Breakers. The Red Stars made the most of their good fortune after Kristie Mewis failed to convert a penalty for Boston in the first half.
Holders FC Kansas City continued to make a stuttering start to their title defence as Vlatko Andonovski’s side lost 2-1 to Houston Dash. This third defeat in four matches means Kansas currently sit second from bottom in the standings with a solitary point to their name.
Top three: Washington Spirit (10 points), Chicago Red Stars (9), Portland Thorns (8)
Germany: Who will finish second?
Although the Bundesliga title has already been decided, the race for second place and a UEFA Women’s Champions League spot still hangs in the balance. Champions League finalists Wolfsburg were soundly beaten 4-0 by Turbine Potsdam in the penultimate round of matches to leave them with just a one-point advantage over rivals Frankfurt. Laura Lindner’s brace and further goals from Svenja Huth and Felicitas Rauch propelled theTorbienen to victory.
Mandy Islacker, Dzsenifer Marozsan and Yuki Ogimi all found the target as Frankfurt cruised to a 3-0 win over Sand, while newly-crowned champions Bayern Munich celebrated a 1-0 victory over Essen thanks to yet another strike from Dutch international Vivianne Miedema.
The She-Wolves face already-relegated Koln in their final game as Frankfurt take on Bayer Leverkusen, with both teams well aware that only a win will do.
Top three: Bayern Munich (56), Wolfsburg (44), Frankfurt (43)
Sweden: No change at the top
It was business as usual in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan as Rosengard and Linkopings both secured another three points to give themselves a five-point advantage over their nearest challengers at the top of the table. Rosengard brushed aside Mallbackens 6-0 while Linkopings recorded a similarly comfortable 4-1 win.
Five-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Marta opened the scoring for Rosengard, opening the floodgates for Lieke Martens, Emma Berglund, a brace from Ella Masar McLeod and a further strike from Iina Salmi. Meanwhile, two goals from Pernille Mosegaard-Harder and one apiece from Tove Almqvist and Fridolina Rolfo got the job done for Linkopings, who will travel to Rosengard’s stadium for the eagerly anticipated league leaders’ showdown on 29 May.
Top three: Rosengard, Linkopings (both 12), Goteborg (7)
