Duo dedicate win to Kavanagh

Tony Caig and Paul Thirlwell dedicated Carlisle's 3-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Accrington to former manager Graham Kavanagh.

Goalkeeping coach Caig and player Thirlwell have taken temporary charge of the Cumbrians following Kavanagh's sacking and watched as Antony Sweeney, Kyle Dempsey and Billy Paynter scored the goals to seal their first win of the campaign.

"That was for Kav," said Caig. "It was down to all the hard work he has put in and we are sad he had to go.

"I have worked with him a long time and it was emotional when he told us he was going - I have a great relationship with him and it's sad when a friend loses his job.

"The win over Accrington was an illustration of the work he has put in and the players showed what they were capable of, it all came together, and it was largely down to the work Kav has done."

Thirlwell admitted there were tears when Kavanagh, in charge since September 2013, told them he was going.

"It was upsetting and there were some teary eyes - it was emotional. It's tough when someone you have worked with for so long and you know how hard they have worked loses their job. It was a sad day.

"Me and Caigy are in charge until we are told otherwise. We are just helping out until a decision is made and we will continue until then."

James Beattie, whose side are still looking for their first win in all competitions, said his side gave Carlisle the confidence.

"We started off well and scored a good goal but then we let them get one back immediately and gave them the confidence to go on and win the game," said the Stanley boss.

"The third goal was controversial but I will have to look at it again before I comment.

"Everyone is disappointed in the dressing room but I have got to pick them up again. I am up for the challenge, we came back last season and we've got to do it again.

"It means Saturday at home to Tranmere is now a massive game but we know what we've got to do and we've got to turn it around."
