Stability at Sunderland helped search for new additions

Gus Poyet believes stability at Sunderland, as he committed to a new contract, helped to attract fresh faces to the club.

Nine additions were welcomed to the Stadium of Light over the course of a productive transfer window.

Poyet feels he was able to enjoy such success as incoming players were aware of the direction the club were heading in.

The Uruguayan agreed an extension to his deal through to 2016 at the start of the summer, allowing him to focus on a recruitment drive and the convincing of top targets that Wearside was the right place for them.

Poyet told the Echo: “No doubt things are a little bit more clear with what I wanted to create and the players I wanted to bring.

“I was able to say to Jack Rodwell that I wanted him to join us because we’re trying to do things in a certain way over the next six months to a year.

“Look at someone like Bucker (Will Buckley). I know him and he knows me and what I want from him.

“He could play for another manager, no doubt. But he knows exactly what is going to happen here.

“Those things give you a bit of help in competing for players.

“We’ve been able to tell these players what we’re hoping to achieve in the next two years.”
