USA beat Czech Republic, Russia hammer Azerbaijan
Russia started their recovery from a disappointing 2014 World Cup campaign with a 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan at the Arena Khimki on Wednesday.
Fabio Capello’s side failed to progress from the group stage in Brazil earlier this summer, but showed no signs of restraint as they eased past their European opponents in Khimki.
Aleksandr Kerzhakov opened the scoring in the sixth minute and added a second six minutes later. Sergey Ignashevich bagged the third goal for Russia four minutes before the half-time interval, and Vladimir Granat wrapped up the scoring in the 81st minute.
Recently departed Liverpool defender Daniel Agger was on target for Denmark against Turkey, but that did not prevent the hosts from suffering a 2-1 home defeat.
The 29-year-old centre-back, now back at Brondby, scored from the penalty spot on 35 minutes, but second-half strikes from Olcay Sahan and Ozan Tufan saw Turkey pick up a win in Odense.
The USA edged past the Czech Republic 1-0 in Prague, thanks to a 39th-minute goal from Alejandro Bedoya.
In other friendly internationals on Wednesday, Lithuania and the UAE played out a 1-1 draw, Latvia got the better of Armenia 2-0, and Morocco were held to a goalless draw by Qatar.
