Gemma Bonner hails winners in Liverpool Ladies squad

Liverpool Ladies skipper Gemma Bonner believes the winning mentality that runs through the squad puts them in good stead to remain in the title picture come the final weekend of the season.

The defending champions are sandwiched between Birmingham and league leaders Chelsea with two points separating the top three sides in FA Women's Super League 1.

Buoyed by a dramatic 2-1 win over Birmingham on their last outing, Liverpool visit Continental Cup finalists Arsenal on Sunday, needing three points to boost their chances of retaining their crown.

"The squad is in a pretty good mood coming off the back of a couple of good results and I think everyone is happy," Bonner told Sky Sports. "We've trained well after a week off and we're looking forward to Sunday's game.

"When you look at every player in our squad you can see how much they want to win and they show that every day in training.

"I think we have got a squad of winners and that definitely showed last year. I think the character the girls have shown in the last couple of games, particularly grinding that result out at Birmingham in the last minute, sums up the sort of character we have in the squad.

"It's now up to us to go again. It's another massive game on Sunday and it's where you need your experienced players to come out and perform and we've definitely done that of late.

"One thing in our favour this year is that we have the experience of winning it last year and I'd like to think that will help in the big games at such an important time of the season."

Bonner thinks her former club Chelsea are in pole position to win the title but says Liverpool will do their utmost to push them to the very end.

"Chelsea are one point ahead so the title's in their hands," said the 23-year-old. "It's for them to lose it and it's up to us and Birmingham to put pressure on them.

"When you come to the latter part of the season I think it's all about winning games, so for us - first and foremost - we've got to win the game on Sunday and try to forget about the other results.

"It's important for us to focus on picking up the three points and if we do that we'll give ourselves a good chance come the last game of the season."
