England international Karen Carney in line to win 100th cap

Karen Carney is in line to make her 100th appearance for England when they face Germany in front of a record crowd at Wembley on November 23.

The Birmingham City captain, who made her international debut against Italy in 2005 and has scored 23 times for her country, could reach her century of caps in front of 55,000 fans.

Eight of the Team GB side that beat Brazil at the same venue in the London Olympics have been named in Mark Sampson’s side and he is delighted England will have the opportunity to face the European Champions at Wembley.

Special

“To play Germany at Wembley Stadium is a special moment for not only the team but the women’s game in England,” he told the FA’s official website.

"So many people have worked incredibly hard in recent times and over the years to grow the women’s game in this country and the match will be a real showcase to the football world that England is a proud women’s football nation.

“I speak on behalf of the players when I thank every supporter for their backing. It’s incredible to have 55,000 fans at Wembley, cheering on the England Women’s team.

“We face a big challenge against a great opponent but I know this team will give their all to make our supporters proud."

Incredible

Sampson paid tribute to Carney as she prepares for what could be a landmark appearance for his country.

“Karen Carney is a great person and incredible football talent, in my eyes one of the best in the world. It will be a great moment if she can take the field to win her 100th cap. The team are very proud to have Karen as a team-mate.”

England will be further boosted by the news that Germany captain and FIFA World Player of the Year Nadine Angerer will miss the game due to injury.

The match forms part of England’s preparation for next summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup which takes place in Canada. Sampson’s side qualified for the tournament with 10 wins from 10 matches.
