An atmospheric arena
The Commerzbank-Arena has been the scene of great entertainment since its 2005 renovation. It has staged musical performances from Madonna, U2, Justin Timberlake and the Rolling Stones, Frankfurt Galaxy losing a thrilling American Football game against Hamburg Sea Devils in World Bowl XV, and Zinedine Zidane exasperating Brazilians with a series of wow-prompting flicks and 360° turns.
The latter was one of five matches the Commerzbank-Arena hosted at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™. And though the boys in canary-yellow lost 1-0 on that occasion, Brazilians also have good memories of the venue formerly known as the Waldstadion. In the FIFA Confederations Cup decider, one year earlier, a Ronaldinho masterclass helped them thump arch-rivals Argentina 4-1.
The 51,500-seater ground, which boasts over 80 executive suites and even has its own railway station, has also put on some memorable women’s football finals. There, FFC Frankfurt beat Umea IK 3-2 to lift the UEFA Women’s Cup (now known as the UEFA Women’s Champions League) in 2008, and Japan overcame USA on penalties to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in 2011.
The Commerzbank-Arena’s current tenants are Eintracht Frankfurt, and the above snap was taken before their recent hosting of Hannover in the Bundesliga.
