A rapid start helped France cruise to a 5-0 win over Mexico and first place in Group F of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.

A mere 35 seconds into the match, Marie Laure Delie put France in front after Elodie Thomis’s service was deflected by Alina Garciamendez into the path of Les Bleues’ No18. Philippe Bergeroo’s side remained dominant thereafter as captain Wendie Renard scored from Camille Abily’s corner.

Eugenie Le Sommer scored twice, her first goal a delightful culmination of great build-up and combination play between the No9, Thomis and Abily, while her second was a scrappy finish following a rebound that was not held by Cecilia Santiago.

Captain Nayeli Rangel gathered her Mexico team-mates before they went down the tunnel at half-time to try and rally her troops, but it was more of the same from the French after the break. Veronica Perez provided only sparks of attacking danger for Mexico, her closest effort coming from a long-range drive that went high and wide.

With ten minutes to go, Amandine Henry scored a strong contender for goal of the tournament with a sensational strike from 25 yards out, which Santiago had absolutely no chance of stopping as it rippled into the top corner.
