West Bromwich Albion have signed Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans from Manchester United, the English Premier League club announced on Saturday.

Evans is reported to have cost Albion £6m, plus a potential £2m in add-ons, and has agreed a four-year contract. The 27-year-old will link up with former United team-mates Darren Fletcher, James Chester and Ben Foster at The Hawthorns.

"This is a great signing for the club. Jonny brings a lot of experience and will be a big player for us," Albion manager Tony Pulis told the club's official website. "He's a player I've been watching for some time. "We are delighted to have him on board."

Evans, who has 42 international caps, made 198 appearances in eight years with United after coming through the youth ranks at Old Trafford. He won three Premier League titles with United, but had fallen out of favour since the arrival of Dutch manager Louis van Gaal last year.

Evans did not help himself when he was given a six-match suspension by the Football Association after spitting at Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse and had only featured once since that incident in March this year.

"I hope to push the Albion up the league," Evans said. "It's a new, fresh challenge for me. One I'm looking forward to. I know a few of the lads already and I spoke to a couple, who highly recommended the club."
