South America’s two representatives for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 have been determined, with Brazil and Venezuela securing passage after a dramatic final day of qualifying.
The pair along with Argentina and Colombia were still in contention entering the final matchday of the South American Women's U-20 Championship in Santos, Brazil.
The opening match saw Venezuela collect a 2-1 comeback victory over Colombia thanks to a late winner from Vimarest Diaz. It is the first time the Vinotinto have qualified for the U-20 Women’s World Cup, but it follows on from their strong showing at the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica last year where the team came fourth.
Brazil’s final-day experience was less dramatic as they raced to a 2-0 advantage over Argentina through goals from Kelen and Jennifer, before ultimately securing a 3-1 victory margin to become continental queens once again. The result means Brazil will feature in their eighth tournament, maintaining a perfect record of qualification.
