Melbourne City Women were crowned Australian champions for a second consecutive season after their 2-0 victory in the W-League Grand Final over Perth Glory in front of a record 4,591 crowd at Perth's nib Stadium.
A strike from player-coach Jessica Fishlock in first-half stoppage time and Beverly Yanez in the 72nd minute helped Melbourne become the first-ever side to win consecutive Westfield W-League championships.
Fisholock scored from the edge of the six-yard box after some great build-up play from City right before the break to give the visitors some momentum heading into the second half. Yanez scored from the left wing, well outside the penalty area, sending her cross-cum-shot over the reach of Perth goalkeeper Gabrielle Dal Busco.
“There’s a lot of emotions going on right now,” Fishlock told the Herald Sun after the match. "The girls were brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Our (first) goal summed up the way we wanted to play.
“It was a tough season, there’s no doubt about that and that just goes to show how much this league has grown - credit to all the other teams. But for us to go through the season that we have and come here, concede one goal in our last four games, that’s no coincidence.”
