46 days to go: Brazil host the cleanest FIFA Confederations Cup
Only 46 bookings were given at the 2013 edition in Brazil, which has gone down in history not only for the hosts’ superlative football with their young talisman Neymar, but also for its discipline.
Referees were required to pull out the yellow card on average just 2.88 times per match, lower than all the previous editions of the competition. For example, in Germany 2005 there were 71 cautions, a rate of 4.44 per match. Moreover, only four red cards were shown in 16 matches in Brazil.
The unruliest encounters in Confederations Cup history were France v Colombia and New Zealand v Colombia in 2003, plus Czech Republic v Uruguay in 1997, all of which produced nine bookings each, as well as Egypt v Saudi Arabia in 1999, which saw three red cards.
