As part of the week’s events around the 67th FIFA Congress in Bahrain, FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura paid a special visit to the Supreme Council of Women of Bahrain on Tuesday 9 May.
Leading a delegation that included FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer, Sarai Bareman; FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer, Joyce Cook; and FIFA Corporate Communications & Public Affairs Manager, Honey Thaljieh, the Secretary General took part in a presentation to Supreme Council officials, as well as Parliament, Shura, Olympics, federations, youth and sports members, on the empowerment of women in Bahrain.
The presentation included a welcome speech by the Secretary General of the Supreme Council, Dr. Hala Mohammed Al Ansari, a networking opportunity over lunch, a group photo, and the signing of the VIP guest book by the Secretary General.
With the cooperation of the Head of Bahrain women’s football, Shaikha Hussa Khalid Al Khalifa, there was also a discussion on how sport is vital to foster gender equality and social development in Bahrain and beyond.
“Your mission is our mission; opportunities should be for all - regardless of gender, origin, social status or religious belief. We must represent humanity first,” said Samoura.
Tuesday’s presentation was an opportunity for the Supreme Council, which is Bahrain’s advisory body to the government on women's issues, to fulfil one of its goals of empowering women in Bahrain through the continuity of lifelong learning, as well as providing equal and diverse opportunities for women in the Middle Eastern Kingdom.
The visit by the Secretary General and her delegation also fulfilled the Supreme Council’s objective to integrate with allies and partners in establishing a house of expertise specialised in women's affairs according to international standards with national expertise.
