Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk unsure of future
Virgil van Dijk is waiting to see what happens regarding his Celtic future following the club’s failure to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Celtic failed to make the most of their Champions League reprieve after losing at home to Maribor on Tuesday night and will now play in the Europa League.
Missing out on Europe’s elite club competition has raised question marks over the future of Van Dijk, who is a target for Sevilla, Southampton and Sunderland.
The 23-year-old, who joined Celtic from Groningen last summer, has suggested he is unsure whether he will still be at Parkhead beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.
“It is difficult to say if this defeat will have an influence on my future,” said Van Dijk in the Daily Record. “I want to play at the highest level.
“We were playing for a place in the Champions League and we did not deserve to go through. You have to be honest.
“I am a Celtic player for now but we will have to see what happens.
“The Champions League is the highest level and now we have gone into the Europa League. We shall see.
“Now I am a Celtic player but the transfer window is open until Monday night.”
