Peterborough's Kyle Vassell out to climb leagues

Kyle Vassell is hoping to emulate the achievements of his Peterborough United predecessors and climb the league ladder.

A steady stream of top talent has passed through London Road in recent years, with many going on to grace the very top of the English game.

Former favourites George Boyd and Dwight Gayle are on the books at Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively, with the latter having moved to the Premier League for £4.5million in 2013.

Britt Assombalonga went for a similar price to Nottingham Forest this summer, while another of Peterborough’s former prolific marksmen, Craig Mackail-Smith, is back in action at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Vassell has offered enough during the early weeks of the season to suggest that he is capable of treading a similar path, with four goals plundered in five Sky Bet League 1 outings.

He said ahead of a meeting with Port Vale on Saturday: “I just try and do what Gayle has done – score goals and win games.

“If I could do the same as him and move up the leagues, I would be buzzing.

“But I haven’t come here to emulate him, I’ve come here to be myself and let the chances and goals take care of themselves.

“If we can win the league, then great. Automatic promotion is an unwritten target.”
