Leighton Baines ruled out for England with training ground injury

Leighton Baines ruled out for England with training ground injury

Leighton Baines has been forced to pull out of the England squad after suffering an injury in training.

The Everton defender suffered the problem during a session on Friday morning, but manager Roy Hodgson will not call-up a replacement for Saturday's Group E qualifier against Slovenia at Wembley.

The absence of Baines leaves Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs as the only available left-back for this weekend after Manchester United's Luke Shaw was not included in the 23-man squad for the qualifier.

Hodgson had planned to rest the 19-year-old for the Slovenia match, with Shaw likely to feature in Tuesday's friendly against Scotland, and England were unable to adjust the list following the UEFA deadline of 11am.

A Football Association spokesman said: "Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad and will miss the games against Slovenia and Scotland.

"The Everton defender picked up an injury in training on Friday morning and will return to his club for treatment.

"No further call-ups will be made at this time."

This latest withdrawal has further hampered Hodgson's preparations as United's Michael Carrick and Tottenham's Andros Townsend pulled out with groin and ankle problems earlier this week.

Stewart Downing missed training on Friday after sustaining a knock, but should be available this weekend.
