Jese set for Real Madrid return against Cornella

Jese set for Real Madrid return against Cornella

Jese Rodriguez is set for his first appearance in almost nine months as Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rings the changes for the Copa del Rey clash against Cornella, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema among a host of star players rested.

Madrid claimed a club-record 16th successive victory with Saturday's 2-1 triumph at Malaga, and with three very winnable home games against Cornella, Celta Vigo and Ludogorets in the next week, they seem certain to extend that mark further still.

However, with his side boasting a 4-1 lead from the first leg of their last-32 clash with Segunda B side Cornella, Ancelotti will change a winning team as he plans to give some of his fringe players a chance to impress.

The Italian said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday's game at the Bernabeu: "We're going to make rotations. Not because the team is tired, they look good to me and have no problems.

"We're rotating because we need to give minutes to players who have not had them up to now.

"The team is more or less decided. Pepe, [Sergio] Ramos, Marcelo, Ronaldo, Benzema and [Toni] Kroos will be rested."

Ancelotti confirmed that Asier Illarramendi, Sami Khedira and youngster Alvaro Medran will start in midfield, and highly rated forward Jese is also set to play some part in the second half.

The 21-year-old has been sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury during Madrid's Champions League win over Schalke in March.

Aside from Madrid's clash with Cornella, the only second-leg tie taking place this week sees Sevilla play host to Sabadell.

Like the one involving holders Madrid, that tie also looks done and dusted with Sevilla boasting a 6-1 advantage from the first meeting.

The rest of this week's last-32 matches are all first legs, including four all-Primera Division ties.

Among them are Deportivo La Coruna's home match with Malaga, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday - four days after a Depor fan was killed during violent clashes ahead of their Primera Division match at Atletico Madrid.

Depor, who held a minute's silence during their training session on Monday morning to show their condolences and support for the family of 43-year-old Francisco Javier Romero Taboada, are also due to host Malaga in the league on Saturday.

The other matches pitting top flight teams against each other see Valencia take on Rayo Vallecano, Eibar face Getafe and Cordoba meet fellow strugglers Granada.

Barcelona, who were beaten by Madrid in last year's final, take on Huesca while defending Primera Division champions and 2013 winners Atletico Madrid are also up against a third-tier side in L'Hospitalet.

Athletic Bilbao, whose tally of 23 Copa del Rey wins is second only to Barcelona (26), have been drawn against Alcoyano, who are in the same regional division as L'Hospitalet and Cornella.

The other ties are Alaves v Espanyol, Las Palmas v Celta, Real Valladolid v Elche, Cadiz v Villarreal, Real Oviedo v Real Sociedad, Albacete v Levante and Real Betis v Almeria.
