Bradley Wright-Phillips helps NY Red Bulls claim first 2015 MLS win
MLS' 2014 top-scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips claimed his first goal of the new season as New York Red Bulls clinched their first win of 2015 with a 2-0 home victory over DC United.
Former Southampton and Charlton striker Wright-Phillips hit Red Bulls' opener in the 25th minute, before setting up fellow Englishman Lloyd Sam for the home side's second goal on 71 minutes.
Chris Pontius fired a penalty over Red Bulls' crossbar in second-half stoppage time as DC United suffered a first loss of the season.
Elsewhere, San Jose Earthquakes celebrated the opening game at their new Avaya Stadium with a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire.
A capacity crowd of 18,000 only had to wait until the fifth minute for the opening goal for San Jose's Fatai Alashe, who headed home from close range after Chicago failed to clear a corner.
San Jose made it 2-0 in the 21st minute through Ty Harden when Fire 'keeper Sean Johnson failed to hold on to a Clarence Goodson strike and Harden slotted home the loose ball.
Harrison Shipp pulled one back for Fire's first goal of the season but Frank Yallop's team went on to fall to their third-straight loss in 2015.
