CONMEBOL to implement ambitious development programme
A fundamental step towards further enhancing its organisational efficiency is set to be taken by CONMEBOL with the decision to implement concrete measures following a FIFA development mission to South America’s confederation and a confirmation letter sent by FIFA on 20 March 2015.
At the request of CONMEBOL, a FIFA delegation visited South American football’s governing body in late January to conduct a two-day leadership retreat with CONMEBOL’s executive committee, following an organisational review in November.
Among the objectives discussed and agreed to by CONMEBOL’s leadership are the need to review its administrative structure and existing processes and to systematise internal procedures in the areas of finance and human resources, which are seen as key to the organisation’s future.
The review, which took stock of the general state of the organisation, looked at areas where it was strong and areas where there is room for improvement, and sought to formalise a number of recommendations for the organisation across the board; the areas concerned were, among others, the confederation’s governance, administration, marketing and communications, implementing a club licensing system and structuring and strengthening its technical department.
Other subjects were also discussed during the review, such as security, medical and refereeing matters.
The exercise is not only about reviewing existing situations, but also for the organisation’s leadership to agree on a specific roadmap with specific steps to be carried out.
For each of the areas identified as a priority for improvement, FIFA will continue to support CONMEBOL through its development programmes as well as through other capacity-building activities.
“FIFA is very satisfied with the results of the organisational review of CONMEBOL, which follows a meeting of the CONMEBOL Executive Committee held in November 2014 which we supported. CONMEBOL is committed to improving and we will support this commitment, as it is in the interests of football in South America that its confederation grows even stronger,” said FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke.
