Raising the roof in Iran

Raising the roof in Iran

Iranians love their football. That was evidenced by over 100,000 of them crowding the Azadi Stadium recently to watch Persepolis’s AFC Champions League group game at home to Al Nassr.

And it was further evidenced by the celebrations, seen in the above shot, when 22-year-old Mehdi Taremi broke the deadlock with a second-half penalty. That proved to be the only goal, keeping Persepolis top of Group A with two rounds remaining.

The Azadi Stadium is fifth on the list of the world’s biggest football venues, above the likes of Wembley and the Santiago Bernabeu.
