Manchester United's teenage striker James Wilson has signed a new four-year contract, the English Premier League club have announced. United manager Louis van Gaal said this month that he planned to send Wilson out on loan so he could get more first-team experience.

But the 19-year-old has so far remained at Old Trafford and the club have given him a fresh contract which runs until 2019, with an option for a further year. Wilson was not in the United squad for Wednesday's 3-0 win over Ipswich in the English League Cup, but Van Gaal confirmed on Friday he now has no immediate plans to send him on loan.

Wilson scored two goals on his United debut against Hull in May 2014, but the forward has started just two league games under Van Gaal. The Dutchman still has faith in the teenager and he said: "James is one of the brightest young English prospects and we are delighted he has signed a new contract.

"He is a very talented forward player and has a keen eye for goal. His development is continuing in the right direction and it is clear to see that he has a fine future ahead of him."
