Adelaide leave it late, Sydney fire four

Adelaide leave it late, Sydney fire four

Adelaide United stepped up the pressure on the Australian A-League pace-setters with a last-minute winner against ten-man Western Sydney Wanderers.

Adelaide trailed to Labinot Haliti's goal but Bruce Djite equalised six minutes after half-time and, after Wanderers defender Matthew Spiranovic was sent off, Sergio Cirio scored to earn the 2-1 victory. The result leaves United third in the table, level on points with second-placed Melbourne Victory and a point behind Perth Glory. Perth play Melbourne City on Sunday.

Sydney FC beat Central Coast Mariners 4-2 with goals in the final ten minutes from Shane Smeltz and Marc Janko. Austria striker Janko had opened the scoring in the 14th minute but Fabio Ferreira struck twice to give Central Coast the lead.

But Rhyan Grant equalised, fellow substitute Smeltz scored the crucial third Sydney goal and Janko made the game safe in stoppage time.

Chelsea can create 10-point gap at the top with win over Burnley

Chelsea can create 10-point gap at the top with win over Burnley

Chelsea will look to open up a 10-point lead over title rivals Manchester City when relegation-threatened Burnley travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Jose Mourinho's Premier League leaders can put the champions under real pressure by claiming three points ahead of their Saturday Night Football clash with Newcastle United.

The Blues were forced to hold on at times in their 1-1 Champions League last-16 draw at PSG, but Mourinho will be confident they can return to winning ways in front of their own fans where they have failed to win on just one occasion this season.

Burnley sit second from bottom of the Premier League and travel to the Bridge with the odds stacked against them, having won just once on the road this season.

Despite the lack of resullts away from home, the Clarets have produced a number of industrious displays which, if repeated, could cause a potenitally fatigued Chelsea side problems.

Team news

Awaiting Chelsea team news

Burnley welcome Stephen Ward back into the squad for the first time in two and a half months for the trip to London.

The full-back has recovered from a fractured ankle suffered in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle at the start of December.

Dean Marney has undergone successful surgery on his cruciate ligament injury but will be out until next season along with Kevin Long. Matt Taylor suffered a slight setback in his recovery from Achilles surgery but he is back training with the squad again.

Opta facts

Chelsea have kept 16 clean sheets in their last 20 Premier League home games, conceding just six goals in that run.

Burnley have won just two of their 31 Premier League away games (W2 D5 L24) and kept just one clean sheet in those matches.

All four shots on target in the first half of Burnley v Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Barclays Premier League season resulted in goals.

Danny Ings has scored in five of his last six Premier League matches, while Diego Costa has scored six goals in his last seven top-flight outings.

The Clarets have won just one of their last nine Premier League matches (W1 D3 L5)

The Londoners have won 33 and lost just one of their last 40 Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge.

Merson's prediction

Chelsea did enough in midweek against PSG and when they scored they were happy because they’re confident of beating them at Stamford Bridge. I don’t see a problem for Jose Mourinho’s men against Burnley. Sean Dyche will set up his side to have a go and they can cause teams problems, but I just don’t see any problems for the Blues. Burnley will score because they’re not going there with 10 men behind the ball, but a goal is all I see them getting.

Krankl: the hero of Cordoba

Hans KRANKL

Every footballing nation – and probably every team to play the beautiful game around the world – has matches that bring to mind particularly special memories, whether negative or positive. The Germans, for example, always enjoy recalling the 1954 World Cup Final, better known as the ‘Miracle of Bern’, while since 2014 the Brazilians have been attempting to process their 7-1 World Cup semi-final thrashing in front of a home crowd at the hands of the eventual world champions.

Even the four-time World Cup winners’ immediate neighbours Austria have special recollections of facing their long-time rivals. Whenever these two nations meet, football aficionados rummage through the history books to reference Austria’s 3-2 win at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

At that point, it had been 37 years since Die Rot-Weiss-Roten had last got the better of their more powerful big brother and then reigning world champions. This dispiriting run was finally brought to an end thanks in no small part to the efforts of striker Hans Krankl, whose brace elevated him to legendary status in his home country. The encounter is remembered as the ‘Miracle of Cordoba’ by one set of fans and the ‘Shame of Cordoba’ by the other.

“Back then we had the best [Austrian] national team of all time!” Krankl once said. “We flew to Argentina without any great expectations. We arrived as nobodies and proved that even a small footballing country can spring surprises. The highlight of it all was the match at Cordoba,” he recalled, before sounding a note of criticism about his nation’s record against the Germans: “We won once in 50 years – that was it.”

Krankl did not intend his comments to diminish the significance of the game. Instead, he was seeking to highlight how little the balance of power between the two nations has shifted in the intervening years, a fact that makes this unforgettable victory of scant consolation to long-suffering Austrian fans.

From Vienna to Barcelona...
In contrast, the game marked a breakthrough for the then 25-year-old, whose four World Cup goals prompted Barcelona to lure the striker to Spain. Krankl signed his new contract just seven days after the triumph over Germany. Strangely enough, he had already agreed terms with league rivals Valencia before Barcelona realised that his exceptional shooting ability, formidable left foot and aerial strength were reason enough to declare an interest of their own. He has since admitted that the decision to join the Catalan club was not a difficult one.

Krankl faced high expectations when arriving on the Iberian Peninsula. In the season before the World Cup, he proved his exceptional quality by netting 41 goals for Rapid Vienna and ending the season as Europe’s most prolific goalscorer. In the same year, he finished second only to England’s Kevin Keegan in the vote for European Footballer of the Year.

‘Hansi-Burli’, as he was affectionately known in his homeland, shrugged off the pressure effortlessly to score 29 of Barcelona’s 69 league goals in his first season and even surpassed the then record set by the legendary Alfredo di Stefano back in 1957.

Barça coach Lucien Muller was full of praise for his latest star, declaring him to be “the best left-footed player I’ve seen since Ferenc Puskas.” Krankl himself described Barcelona as “paradise – the best thing that could happen to a player.” He spent two years in the club’s distinctive red and blue strip and even managed to torment the Germans once again, scoring the game’s penultimate and ultimately decisive goal in a 4-3 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf in the 1979 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final.

...and back again
Nevertheless, after a less successful second campaign in Catalonia, it was time for Krankl – who had even tried his hand as a goalkeeper as a 15-year-old – to return to his birthplace of Vienna and to Rapid, where his career began and where he felt most at home. By the time he hung up his boots, he had made 449 appearances for the Green and Whites, scoring 336 times along the way. In 1999 he was not only voted into Rapid’s team of the century but was also recognised as the club’s best player of the past hundred years. Appreciation for Krankl extended well beyond his hometown, and he was named Austria’s Footballer of the Year on five separate occasions – 1973, 1974, 1977, 1982 and 1988.

No sooner had his playing career drawn to a close than Krankl began a coaching career that did not bring him comparable success. He managed ten sides between 1989 and 2009, including a three-year stint at the helm of the Austrian national team. “I had my time. I had my successes – or failures, as my critics liked to call them,” he said, before adding with a smile: “My greatest achievement was 40 years of marriage.”

But Krankl’s talents extend beyond the football pitch. Since the 1970s he has also enjoyed success as a singer, releasing songs such as ‘Der Bätmän bin I’ and the Paul Anka cover ‘Lonely Boy’, which peaked at number two in the Austrian charts in January 1986. He was also a regular feature in the country’s artistic and intellectual circles.

Despite his many talents, the ‘Goleador’, ‘Saviour of Austrian Football’, ‘Hanse’, ‘Nachtfalke’ (Nighthawk) or ‘Graue Bomber’ (Grey Bomber) – to list just some of his many nicknames – will always remain a hero of Austria football, in no small part due to, or even precisely because of, the ‘Miracle of Cordoba’.

Robben: The Spain result was crazy

Robben: The Spain result was crazy

Memories are curious things; regardless of whether they are positive or negative, everyone is able to identify with the feelings that are stirred up when certain recollections are brought to mind. Perhaps they draw an unconscious smile or send a shiver down the spine, but they can also provoke wistful thoughts of what might have been.

Footballers are no different, as FIFA.com’s new interactive video interviews show, in which the standout performers at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ look back on select moments from the tournament - without knowing which clips they will see.  In doing so they express surprise, amusement and reveal their likeable characters: after all, even the greatest players are only human too.

Lionel Messi was the first to take the challenge and now Dutch attacker Arjen Robben follows suit, having inspired the Netherlands’ progress in Brazil with his sensational displays as both creator and goalscorer.

A sixth sense
Robben had spells with PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea and Real Madrid before moving to Bayern Munich in 2009. In the Oranje’s first game at Brazil 2014, he faced former club-mates Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos of defending champions Spain. He did not speak to them directly after the encounter, however. “It’s difficult after the game because they were very disappointed,” Robben said. “They’d lost the match 5-1. They’re exceptional players and it was a privilege to play with them in Madrid. Now we’ve played against each other a few times, but always with a lot of respect.”

Robben scored twice in that match and although he was not on target in the Round-of-16 tie with Mexico, he did win the penalty shortly before the final whistle that helped the Netherlands reach the next round.

Indeed, being fouled is nothing new for the Dutchman, who has to take extra care to protect himself from rough challenges. “It’s a bit of a shame that you showed this video,” the 31-year-old said, turning on the charm. “In the same game there were a lot of fouls. In the first half a defender broke his ankle by kicking me. It was also a penalty. There are many examples of fouls and you need to have a kind of sixth sense in order to see what’s coming. You have to try to protect yourself but it’s not always possible.”

Unfortunately for Robben, he did not see Javier Mascherano approach in the semi-final against Argentina, just when he looked certain to score: “I was more focused on the ball and looking at the goalkeeper and where I was going to shoot. We’ll never know what would’ve happened if he hadn’t been there with his big toe and the ball had gone in. But that’s football.”

More from Robben...
If you would like to hear what else Robben had to say then simply click on the video above and discover his thoughts on the comprehensive 5-1 thrashing of Spain in the Netherlands’ opening World Cup game, the gripping last-16 encounter with Mexico - last-gasp penalty included - the goalkeeper swap in the match against Costa Rica, the chance he missed against Argentina and Germany’s triumph in the Final at the Maracana.

Palestinian clubs prepare to make history

Palestinian clubs prepare to make history

The Palestinian national team had a brush with history recently, participating in the AFC Asian Cup for the very first time. While their results at Australia 2015 proved to be disappointing, the Palestinians can nevertheless look back with pride at having established themselves as one of the top 16 teams on the continent.

With the Knights’ Australian adventure now over, it is the turn of Palestine’s clubs to make a historic breakthrough: restricted to the AFC President’s Cup – regarded as Asia’s third club event – up until now, they will henceforth compete in the AFC Cup.

Next week, Hilal Al-Quds Club will enter the play-off round of the AFC Cup, the first time a Palestinian side has taken part in Asia’s second most prestigious club tournament.

The other Palestinian representatives, Taraji Wadi Al-Nes, have already automatically qualified for the group stage, where they will lock horns with Syrian outfit Al-Shorta, Jordanian side Al-Jazeera and a play-off winner that is still to be decided.

Given the popularity of football in Palestine, it is more than likely that Faisal Al-Husseini International Stadium, located in the town of Al-Ram in the West Bank, will be packed to the rafters for the matches – the first time that the arena will have hosted continental club fixtures.

While Hilal Al-Quds will have their work cut out for them versus Syrian team Al-Jaish in the play-off round, Taraji Wadi Al-Nes will get their inaugural campaign up and running on 24 February at home to Al-Jazeera, in the opening match of Group B.

Wadi Al-Nes defender Ahmad Jamal confirmed to FIFA.com that the reigning West Bank Premier League champions were looking forward to this historic encounter.

“Palestinian football has come a long way over the last few years, in both Arab and Asian tournaments. We’re not just taking part in the AFC Cup to make up the numbers; our intention is to qualify for the second round,” he said.

“Wadi Al-Nes are making their debut in the competition, and we’re going to give 100 per cent as we try to overcome hurdles and achieve positive results. We’ve got a few surprises up our sleeves for all our supporters, despite the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in at home,” continued the 27-year-old.

A new era
Palestinian clubs have not fared too poorly in Asian competition since their AFC President’s Cup bow in 2011, with Markaz Shabab Al-Am'ari reaching the final in 2012, a match they lost 2-1 to Tadjik side Istiqlol.

Hilal Al-Quds graced the final group stage themselves the following year in Malaysia, prior to Palestinian clubs being finally permitted to enter the AFC Cup. According to Jamal, this breakthrough only came about due to the efforts put in by the Palestinian Football Association and its president, Jibril Al Rajoub.

“Palestinian football recieved a huge boost when Jibril Al Rajoub took over, because he has since overseen some amazing improvements,” explained Jamal, who has two national league titles and two national cups to his name.

“Our FA has worked so hard on behalf of our national team and clubs. That is clear when you look at how far we’ve risen in the world rankings and the results of our clubs in the President’s Cup. Markaz Shabab Al-Am'ari reached the final and Hilal Al-Quds also made waves.

“Hopefully Hilal Al-Quds can make it to the group stage, as that would have a great impact on Palestinian football as a whole. As for Wadi Al-Nes, let’s hope we can match some of our national team’s recent performances.”

Whether the debutants succeed in registering postive results or not, one thing is clear: participating in this significantly more demanding continental competition will provide a timely boost to the sport in Palestine.

Confira a lista completa:

Sergio Agüero (Manchester City)
Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)
Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
Diego Costa (Chelsea)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (PSG)
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern de Munique)
Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
Thomas Müller (Bayern de Munique)
Neymar (Barcelona)

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi face off in Portugal's 1-0 win over Argentina

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi face off in Portugal's 1-0 win over Argentina

MANCHESTER, England -- Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo faced off at Old Trafford, a friendly in which Raphael Guerreiro gave Portugal the 1-0 win over Argentina at the death. Here are three points from the match.

1. Messi and Ronaldo draw a rare blank

They are forever together, much as it may irritate both. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, men who have taken their games to a greater height because of competition from the other, players whose trophy cabinets would bulge still further and whose place in history would be still greater but for each other's exploits.

They entered Old Trafford together, two captains who exchanged cursory handshakes with minimal eye contact. They exited together, too, both replaced at halftime in a move that scarcely seemed coincidental. They tend to be goal-a-game men but, for once, neither scored, albeit when confined to 45 minutes apiece.

It was a draw when they were on the field. If Messi was the more prominent, it was probably a reflection of their respective teammates. Argentina possess more world-class players than Portugal. Indeed, both Messi and Ronaldo had struck in their previous international meeting, but the South Americans won 2-1. This time the Barcelona man came closer to scoring, exchanging passes with Lucas Biglia and, from an acute angle, clipping the post.

He directed a free kick over the bar, just as a twisting, turning Ronaldo had got too much elevation on his shot at the other end. The Portuguese is the more ostentatious talent, supplying flicks and tricks, even if one backheel, popular as it was with the fans, proved in vain. It released Jose Bosingwa, but the right-back's cross was hopeless.

While neither did enough to persuade any floating voters as they cast their ballots in the Ballon d'Or, which the men who have dominated an era have shared in the past six years, Ronaldo was the crowd-pleaser. He got the biggest ovation at a ground he graced for six years. Messi was met with boos, pantomime villain style. This was the second, and perhaps final, time they have met at Old Trafford. Ronaldo emerged triumphant on the first occasion, albeit courtesy of Paul Scholes, who scored the decider in the 2008 Champions League semifinal between Manchester United and Barcelona. Messi has some extraordinary achievements to his name, but a draw, let alone a win, at Old Trafford continues to elude him.

2. Portugal's revival continues

Ultimately, it wasn't about the superstars. There were so many of them that there was even a galactico in the directors' box, in Radamel Falcao, accompanied by super-agent Jorge Mendes and the lesser-spotted United midfielder Anderson.

Yet when United manager Louis van Gaal left after 75 minutes, it was hard to criticize his decision. The game was an anti-climax. It seemed certain to end in stalemate. Instead, two of Portugal's substitutes combined. Ricardo Quaresma crossed and Raphael Guerreiro plunged forward to score a diving header for the winner. This was a wonderful moment for him, on just his second cap, while Quaresma, albeit briefly, offered a reminder of why he was briefly deemed a brighter prospect than Ronaldo.

And while Argentina had looked likelier to score, Beto was not required to make any world-class saves. Portugal continued their improvement under Fernando Santos. He was parachuted in after their wretched start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign under Paulo Bento. They have begun cautiously under the former Greece manager and are yet to concede in his reign. A third clean sheet was the most prestigious, a third win the greatest boost to morale yet.

Sometimes friendlies lack a competitive edge. This one didn't. This was a match where the yellow card had to be brandished regularly. After the mistimed tackles, however, came the perfectly judged header and Portugal had a major win.

3. Nani almost harms United

Manchester United's injury problems have been exacerbated in the international break. First Michael Carrick was hurt, then David de Gea and most recently Daley Blind. The curse seemed to continue when Angel Di Maria went down in seeming agony. It seemed even worse for United: this was inflicted by one of their own. Nani, whose wages United are paying while he plays for Sporting Lisbon, had trodden on his foot with a late challenge. It looked the revenge of the reject, a rare moment in recent years when Nani exerted a destructive impact at Old Trafford.

He was rendered surplus to requirements when United embarked on a glamorous upgrade on the flanks in the summer. Thankfully for the watching Van Gaal, his biggest buy got to his feet, albeit gingerly. In a rare piece of good news for United, Di Maria then continued and returned to full pace.

Argentina manager Tata Martino had suggested Di Maria's recent dip in form was only to be expected as he adjusts to new teammates and a different league. In the more familiar surroundings of the Argentina team, the 59.7 million pound Di Maria was slightly brighter, if not exactly justifying his price tag. His time at United began with a flurry of goals and there was almost another. Messi set up Di Maria for a shot that went narrowly wide. There were a couple of teasing crosses. A whipped shot was saved by Beto. It proved his final contribution as, after 61 minutes, Di Maria departed.

Nani, who has been revitalised on his return to Lisbon, has proved a regular scorer for Sporting, but produced a performance that was sadly familiar for United. He flattered to deceive. Rather than Ronaldo, he was on free kick duty, perhaps because the captain felt even he could not score from such distances and angles. Nani is only on loan at Sporting and has a further three years on his United contract. It remains to be seen if this is final appearance at Old Trafford or if, Marouane Fellaini-style, he can revive his career at the club.

Master class from pianist Lang Lang at Camp Nou

Master class from pianist Lang Lang at Camp Nou

While visiting Barcelona, Chinese pianist Lang Lang paid a visit to the stadium where he was welcomed by FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu

Chinese pianist Lang Lang is considered one of the greatest prodigies in the world of classical music and is currently in Barcelona to attend the closing of a camp for young performers organised by his Foundation. While in the city, he came to Camp Nou to share one of his other great passions in life, football.

The young Chinese artist was welcomed to the stadium on Saturday by club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, with whom he chatted at length about his reasons for being in the city and different aspects of Barça and football in general, as well how music and football are both such valuable vehicles for promoting values among young people.

Music on the Camp Nou pitch

Lang went down to pitch level, where he was able to enjoy the sensation of sitting at a piano not in a typical auditorium or concert hall, but in the vast emptiness of one of the most magnificent stadiums in the world. He played a few classical tunes before ending with his own interpretation of the Barça anthem.

He is in Barcelona on occasion of the second Junior Music Camp being run by the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, and sponsored by Allianz, which visits a different city each year.

The Catalan capital was the chosen venue for this year’s edition, which is being attended by 14 youngsters from different countries, who are spending six days sharing their love of music and exchanging experiences while also getting to know a new city. The first edition, in 2013, was held in Munich. The closure of the campus involves a master class by Lang himself on Saturday in the Auditorium for 500 guests.

Lang Lang (Shenyang, China, 1982) is not just one of the most brilliant pianists of this age, but has also revolutionised classical music by making use of new technologies and social networks to promote the genre around the world, and especially among young people. More than 30 million young people in China are studying piano, largely inspired by what Lang has achieved. He has performed with some the most important orchestras in the world and also at several sports events, such as the closing ceremony at the Brazil 2014 World Cup and the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

He is also famed for his charity work, which are channelled through the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, and which seeks to train future talents, promote the use of technology in music education and encourage young people to take an interest in experiencing live music. During his conversation with President Bartomeu, one of the subjects that came up was the possibility of future collaborations with the FC Barcelona Foundation.

During the visit, President Bartomeu expounded on the siginificance of the visit: “Lang Lang is a world figure and for him to come to FC Barcelona, knowing how much he likes football, will be a great help for uniting Barça with the many boys and girls that he is in touch with through music. Young people can be reached through sport, and they can also be reached, by doing things like this, through music.”

The Chinese pianist gave his analysis as well: “It was incredible to be able to play in such an amazing place as this legendary team’s stadium. I like Barça because they play so artistically. They play football like an art form. It is fantastic to watch how they play as a team with artists like Xavi, Messi and Iniesta on the pitch. Their style of play is the closest thing there is to music.”

Neymar closer to all time top 3 for Brazil

Neymar closer to all time top 3 for Brazil

The FC Barcelona striker now has 42 goals for the 'canarinha' and moves to within striking distance of Pele, Ronaldo and Romario

With his two goals on Tuesday in the friendly against Turkey, Neymar Jr now has found the net on 42 occasions in just 59 matches for the Brazilian national side. As such he moves ever closer to the top three goalscorers on the all time list for the ‘canarinha’. Currently, if we include official competition and friendlies, Pelé, Ronaldo and then Romário head the illustrious ranking.

‘O’Rei’ heads the list with 77 goals in 92 matches, an average of 0.84 goals per game, Ronaldo is in second place with 62 goals in 98 games (0.63), and then we find Romário on 55 goals in 70 encounters (0.79). Neymar’s current average is 0.69 goals per game. Nevertheless, none of the above had scored so many goals at such a young age. At just 22 years of age, if Neymar continues at this pace then he will move into top spot by the age of 28.

Two of the current top three all time leading goalscorers for Brazil are former blaugranes. Both Romário and Ronaldo delighted Barça fans with their goals, albeit briefly in both cases, with their goals in the 1990’s. For his part Pelé is no stranger to Camp Nou having played there in friendlies against Barça in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Goalscoring run

Since last season’s World Cup, Brazil have played five friendly matches, winning all of them, scoring 12 and conceding none. Of those 12, Neymar has claimed 7. The Barça striker is on a great goalscoring streak – with the blaugranes this season he has 12 in 14 official matches and is the second in the goalscoring charts in la Liga.

UD Almeria v FC Barcelona (1-2): Barça make late comeback and win

UD Almeria v FC Barcelona (1-2): Barça make late comeback and win

MICHAEL TOLL

Late goals by Neymar and Alba erase 1-0 deficit and hand Barça the victory

Luis Suárez also decisive, chipping in with sublime assists on both goals

With Leo Messi lurking just shy of the all-time La Liga scoring record and with Neymar and Luis Suarez starting the game on the bench, it was a late score by Jordi Alba that completed FC Barcelona's thrilling come from behind 2-1 victory over a surprisingly aggressive Almería side.

On a beautiful sun-soaked afternoon in the south of Spain, Almería took the field with tight man-to-man defence. Both sides exchanged possessions in the opening minutes until Messi and Munir El Haddadi led a Barça counterattack, stemming from an Almería corner kick, with each having a shot blocked in a scramble right in front of the net.

Chances aplenty

By the quarter hour mark, it was evident that the hosts had no plans to back down. Despite Almería’s hard work, Barça did have their chances. Perhaps their best opportunity came in the 28th minute, as Ivan Rakitic and Messi had back-to-back headers denied. Rakitic’s was turned away by a diving Rubén and Messi’s hit the bar.

With Barça threatening again in the 37th, Messi was dancing outside the area, carrying the ball and looking for space. He was bottled up by the Almería defence, who stole the ball, made a quick outlet pass and, in a blink, sent Thievy on a breakaway toward Claudio Bravo. Thievy’s shot went just out of Bravo’s reach and inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.

Reinforcements

After the break, Luis Enrique sent on Neymar and Luis Suárez to try and get the Barça offense back on track. But Almería continued to display their toughness and kept Barça safely at bay until the 16-minute mark, when Luis Suárez sent a textbook volley clanging off the bar.

Another dozen minutes passed by with the midfield bogged down into a chess match. Barça, as usual, upped their time of possession, while the opposition tried in vain to sew up open passing lanes.

Finally, in the 28th minute, Barça broke through. Luis Suárez, looking ever more comfortable, made a nice individual play on the edge of the area to avoid one defender and send a low cross to Neymar. The Brazilian banged it home to knot the game at one apiece.

A brand new game

With new life, Barça pressed for the go-ahead goal. Suarez sent a low shot just wide. Two minutes later, he cleared space and found a cutting Messi, who sent yet another ball careening off the crossbar.

In the 37th minute, Luis Suárez received another ball on the wing, this time from Rakitic. Suarez broke toward the end line and floated a cross that found a charging Jordi Alba. The fleet-footed defender one-timed into the net to complete the dramatic comeback and send Barça home happy.
