Borges: I couldn't have asked for a better start

Borges: I couldn't have asked for a better start

Costa Rica midfielder Celso Borges is happy in his new home, the city of La Coruna, in northwestern Spain. Though rain is a feature of life in this corner of the world, it is more like home than Norway and Sweden, where he has spent the last five years and where snow, freezing temperatures and long nights are the order of the day at this time of year.

“When you’re happy in the place where you work, then everything looks brighter,” said the Tico international, who joined Deportivo La Coruna in the January transfer window.

“Life is very good here and the city really gets behind the team,” he added. “It’s a family club that treats its players very well. Everything’s great and the food’s really good too. The seafood is fantastic.”

A fast learner, he is already tweeting in Galician, the regional language, which he has had no problem getting to grips with thanks to the Portuguese he picked up through his father, former Costa Rica player and coach Alexandre Guimaraes.

“Wherever I go, my family are always with me for the first month,” he explained. “The support they give me really helps me settle in.”

Borges’ family have certainly helped him bed down in La Coruna. No sooner had he unpacked his suitcase than he was making a two-goal Liga debut to help his new club pick up three valuable away points at Rayo Vallecano.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better start,” he reflected. “Scoring those goals was a real confidence booster, though I’ve still got some way to go to be at my best. But the coach is giving me opportunities, and I’m getting there.”

A rock and heavy metal fan, perhaps the hardest thing for the Tico newcomer to get used to is the choice of music in the Depor dressing room, where reggaeton is very much number one.

“Well, I just have to put up with it and be respectful,” he said with an air of resignation.

Away from the dressing room, Borges is taking a distance course in sports management at the Johan Cruyff Institute and is also preparing to get his coaching badge.

His responsible, professional approach to life has not gone unnoticed by Depor coach Victor Fernandez, who had no hesitation in putting him straight into his starting XI and designating him the team’s penalty taker.

Borges’ latest start came at the Santiago Bernabeu no less, in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid.

“It’s an amazing place,” he said, “It’s unique because of its history and the matches and the players who have graced the stadium. I’m proud to have played there, though what makes me more proud than anything is the fact there’s a Costa Rican there too. That’s a story I can tell my kids.”

The Costa Rican in question is his friend Keylor Navas, of whom he said: “He’s really enjoying himself here. It’s a huge change in every sense but he’s very, very happy. He’s making the most of the experience and he’s training as hard as he can to earn his place in the team. His time will come.”

Before making the move to Spain, the 26-year-old Borges asked the keeper for his views on La Liga, Depor and La Coruna, the latest port of call in a career that began back home with Deportivo Saprissa and has also taken him to Fredrikstad in Norway and AIK in Sweden.

Asked for his own views on La Liga, Borges had this to say: “It’s the passing that dictates the pace of the game here, not just how much you run. The ball zips around really fast and that’s basis of the game in Spain. Physical fitness is very important and you have to run, but the fast pace is dictated by the style of play.”

The skilful Borges, who can operate in a holding role or a more central midfield position, has already experienced that pace for himself, having come up against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos.

“Everything happens so fast that it’s hard to take in,” he said with a smile. “All you see is a blur of white or red jerseys.”

Proud to have run out against the mighty Real Madrid, Borges posted a photo on his Twitter feed of him lining up in a wall alongside the likes of Karim Benzema, Lucas Silva and Gareth Bale.

Building on Brazil 2014
Following the national team’s amazing exploits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, in which Borges played a big part, Tico players are very much in demand at the moment.

“We’re making our mark in the football market,” he said. “We have a very strong team right now, and we understood right from the start that if we did well as a unit, we’d have the chance to take that step forward and achieve something that nobody else expected.”

Following their unforgettable World Cup run, La Sele, who are now coached by Paulo Wanchope, are the No1 CONCACAF team in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

“It’s very hard to get there and very easy to lose it all,” said Costa Rica’s midfield motivator. “Our battle now is to stay there. How do we do that? With the quality we’ve got we can keep on improving. Rather than pursuing individual goals, we need to keep setting targets as a team.”

Borges’ most immediate objective, however, is three points in this Saturday’s Galician derby against Celta Vigo at the Estadio Riazor.

“Every match is full on, but this one’s extra special,” he said, gearing himself up for the clash like a true local. “You don’t play derbies. You win them.”

James: Cristiano is modest and excellent

James: Cristiano is modest and excellent

link interview James Rodrigues

Continuing its look back at what many people regard as one of the greatest FIFA World Cup™ competitions of all time, FIFA.com spoke to none other than the competition’s top scorer, Colombian idol James Rodriguez.

Now plying his trade at Real Madrid, the attacking midfielder, who scored six goals in five games at last year’s world finals, accepted the challenge already faced by Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben: to watch and discuss, with no prior warning, some of the key moments of a competition in which Colombia reached the last eight for the first time in their history.

In reliving a memorable tournament, James tells us why he rates his goal against Japan even more highly than his last-16 thunderbolt against Uruguay. As well as discussing the importance of record-breaking goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon in the Cafetero line-up, the Colombia star talks about Cristiano Ronaldo, his side’s quarter-final elimination at the hands of Brazil, and the chat he had with David Luiz at the end of that game.

The video is available for you to watch now. Just click “play” and let FIFA.com take you and James back to the moments that made Brazil 2014 such a special tournament.

James on the goal against Japan…
I see that and it brings back good memories. That was a tough game, I came in and thank God I managed to score and make two assists. That game is a great memory.
Of all the goals I scored at the World Cup that was the one I liked the best. I wanted to score, and the game was about to finish. It was a long through-ball I ran on to, after which I managed to round the last defender with a feint and dink it over the keeper. This is the one I liked best, besides the one I scored against Uruguay. But personally I liked this one better.
For the Uruguay one I had my back to goal and volleyed it from way out. The ball could have missed the target, you never know. This one required a delicate touch to finish it like I did, which made it more complicated.

On Cristiano Ronaldo…
Cristiano is excellent, both on and off the pitch. He’s ‘a ten out of ten’. For me, he deserved his Ballon d’Or victory for what he’s achieved. He’s an excellent player and an excellent person. And he’s very modest.
We have a very good relationship. Out on the pitch, everyone knows how valuable he is, but it’s impressive to watch how he trains and works off the pitch. That’s where you see the real Cristiano, and you understand why he is where he is.

On Faryd Mondragon…
That was a historic moment. Faryd, being 43 years old, managing to play once again in a World Cup. That’s not easy. But it was the perfect timing: we were winning that game, we’d already qualified for the next round. So José (Pekerman) told him to play. I was very happy for him.
We talked before about the possibility, in case we would be leading. And that’s what happened, so I wish him the best of luck. I hope he always remains with us.

On Brazil-Colombia
Oh, yes… the bug…
It was an unusual game, with a lot of fouls and bickering. They began really going in hard on me, the referee was a bit lenient, but it’s all in the past now. These are sad images for me, but what matters is that we made history and that we have a young group who can continue to improve. This group has a huge desire to do things well and win a lot of things.
David Luiz wished me luck, and told me to be strong because I had an excellent tournament. He told me I am ‘an ace’, that was it…

Gotze: I shouldn't be compared to Messi

Gotze: I shouldn't be compared to Messi

Mario Gotze insists he does not deserve to be compared to Lionel Messi.

The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder was told by Germany coach Joachim Low to show he was better than the Argentinian when he cane on as a substitute in the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ Final. Gotze went to score the only goal with a superb finish.

However, he told Sport Bild magazine: "I think [Low] only said that to motivate me. I came on late and he just found the right words to give me a push.

"Messi has proven his extraordinary talent throughout his whole career with Barcelona. It's not a comparison which should be made. He's achieved so many great things and set the bar so high that practically nobody is ever going to reach it."

Dinner with Pep
Gotze also revealed he went for a meal out with Bayern coach Pep Guardiola recently

"We had an Asian meal, but I wouldn't really call it a date," he said. "It was, however, a very special talk in a relaxed atmosphere.

"Even there, the coach spoke more than anything about football and the way he sees the game, but he doesn't forget to find out how things are with you personally. Such an honest conversation with the coach is very important to a player."

Maradona backs Neuer for Ballon d'Or

Maradona backs Neuer for Ballon d'Or

Argentina legend Diego Maradona said on Monday he believes Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer should pip Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the FIFA Ballon d'Or. "Neither Messi, nor Ronaldo, my favourite is Neuer, he's the one who deserves it the most," said the outspoken former star player and coach during a visit to Cuba.

Maradona arrived in the island nation on Monday to take part in some sports programmes with Venezuelan television station Telesur. But before that, speaking to Radio Habana Cuba, he said "Ronaldo and Messi were resting" during the last year while Neuer was winning the World Cup with Germany.

Title-holder and twice winner Ronaldo, four-time winner Messi and Neuer have been picked for the final shortlist to win the Ballon d'Or. It will be presented during a gala in Zurich on 12 January.

Rooney: Trophies come first

Rooney: Trophies come first

Wayne Rooney is convinced he will become England's greatest ever goal scorer, but would quickly ditch the accolade if it meant he finally won some silverware with the national side.

Rooney looks set to join an elite group of players next month by winning his 100th cap. Rooney also has another landmark in his sights - that of England's top scorer - an honour currently held by Sir Bobby Charlton. Rooney has an opportunity to bridge the eight-goal gap that separates him from his hero on Thursday when he leads England out against San Marino at Wembley.

But the biggest concern Rooney has at the moment is not bettering Charlton's 49-goal England haul, it is the lack of success he has enjoyed with the national side. Ever since he made his debut in 2003 Rooney has won absolutely nothing and he is desperate for that to change.

"It would be great if I could do it (become top scorer)," the England captain said "I'd never have thought that when I came into this England team that I would be best goal scorer. It would be massive for me and make my family proud. I want to do it. But for a footballer, you're in this game for your team-mates and there's nothing better than getting a trophy."

With San Marino and Estonia next up for England, Rooney should be able to reach the 44-goal mark held by the man who is third in the list, Jimmy Greaves. Although Rooney admits moving level with the former Tottenham great is possible, he will not let it weigh heavy on his mind as he leads England out on Thursday.

But for a footballer, you're in this game for your team-mates and there's nothing better than getting a trophy.
England forward Wayne Rooney

"I'm confident in myself and believe I will (do it), but the game (on Thursday) is more important than me scoring four or five goals," he added.

England's upcoming double-header gives Rooney the chance to add to his goal tally, and he spoke of the feeling of playing at Wembley ahead of the San Marino qualifier.

"To get yourself up for a game at Wembley is quite easy," he said. "We can win comfortably. We have to go out and do that."

San Marino are expected to play defensively at Wembley and use every trick in the book to curb England's attacks. Theo Walcott lasted just ten minutes before he had to come off the last time England played San Marino two years ago. Goalkeeper Aldo Junior Simoncini injured the Arsenal winger after making a dangerous high tackle in the 5-0 win at Wembley. Rooney sees no point in holding back against Thursday's opponents though.

He said: "For me, personally, you can't go into a game thinking you've got to avoid tackles. That's how you get injured. We have to play the way we normally would and hopefully we avoid any bad challenge and injuries."

Roy Keane can help me earn England recall

Roy Keane can help me earn England recall

Tom Cleverley hopes Roy Keane’s influence can help him get back into the England squad.

Keane, now assistant manager at Aston Villa, is working with Cleverley during his season-long loan at Villa Park from Manchester United.

The midfielder has been left out of Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia but Cleverley believes the work he is doing with Keane – in the news this week following more revelations in his latest autobiography – will help him gain international recognition once again.

He told the Daily Star: “Roy is demanding. He’s trying to add things into my game that I know I can do.

“He’s pushing me to my limits and hopefully we can get that extra couple more per cent. When things need saying, he says them.

“At United you’re told to play the right way and sometimes last year maybe I was being too much of a perfectionist.

“Sometimes you can take a few more risks which are needed to win games. That’s a side of my game which Roy and the manager (Paul Lambert) are getting back.”

Chelsea striker Diego Costa ready to play for Spain

Chelsea striker Diego Costa ready to play for Spain

Diego Costa says he is ready to play for Spain in their upcoming European qualifiers but insists he will not gamble on his fitness.

Costa scored his ninth Premier League goal in seven matches for Chelsea on Sunday's 2-0 victory over Arsenal which lifted them five points clear at the top of the table.

However, the £32m striker has been struggling with a hamstring problem since last season and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho revealed recently the 25-year-old was barely training.

Mourinho would also have preferred to see his player rest during the international break in order to receive treatment.

Costa, nevertheless, was called up by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque for the qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg, and the Brazil-born forward insists he is ready to contribute.

"I'm here ready to play," he told Spanish sports newspaper Marca after linking up with his international colleagues on Monday. "I've had some problems but it's getting better.

"I've already played three games in a week and the coach knows I carry some problems but I will treat them during the week.

"But I don't want to be in the middle of Spain and Chelsea. Mourinho has not told me anything. One has to take into account that many times I am the one that makes the decision depending on how I feel.

"Here I have the confidence of the coach, the technical team, and if there is a problem I tell them. If I'm here and I'm injured then I don't play because it would be worse."

Costa, who made his Spain debut in March in a 1-0 friendly win over Italy, has yet to score for his adopted country after five matches but is hoping to finally make an impact with the two-time defending European champions.

"What I want more than anything is to succeed here with the national team. Up to now things haven't gone as I had thought they would or as people expected.

"This is why I really want to do a good job with Spain. I haven't scored but if you look at the games I've played, I haven't really had many opportunities to do so.

"I need to work hard in order to score my first goal, something which would make me very happy."

Angelo Henriquez eager to impress Manchester United staff

Angelo Henriquez eager to impress Manchester United staff

Angelo Henriquez hopes an outing on British shores will help him to catch the eye of parent club Manchester United.

The 20-year-old Chilean will be in Glasgow on Thursday for a Europa League clash with Celtic.

He will be turning out for loan employers Dinamo Zagreb, having agreed a season-long deal over the summer.

Henriquez is aware that he needs to make the most of his time away from Old Trafford, having previously taken in spells at Wigan Athletic and Real Zaragoza.

He needs to show those on the coaching staff at United that he has a future in England, with Sir Alex Ferguson having invested £3.5million in his potential back in 2012.

The highly-rated South American is confident he has what it takes to make a positive impact at a Premier League heavyweight, but is also aware that fierce competition for places may force him to look elsewhere.

Henriquez said: “I don’t think it was a backwards step in my career (joining Dinamo) but a good chance to play and get experience of European football.

“Dinamo is a special challenge for me because I know the club aspires to be the best in Croatia and that will help me achieve my goal.

“I have constant contact with people from Manchester United.

“Not (Louis) van Gaal, but people from Carrington, the coaches. They want to know every detail – from the intensity of training here, diet, life in Zagreb. With that amount of care for a year, I know I’m still being followed by United.”

However, on rumours that Dinamo will look to make his move permanent next summer, Henriquez added: “I heard about this idea but I honestly do not know what to say.

“Should I wait for the end of the season and draw the line and see where we are?

“Basically, I would not mind staying in Dinamo because it’s a great club and if things go well I would love to stay here after the expiry of the loan.”

Sheffiield Wednesday appoint duo to key roles at the club

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Paul Bell as chief operating officer and John Redgate as finance director at the club.

Bell was director of commercial affairs for almost five years at Leeds United and Redgate has worked as chief financial officer at Portsmouth.

Club chairman Milan Mandaric said: “I have always stressed the importance of introducing and working alongside genuine football people at Sheffield Wednesday.

“The additions of both Paul and John will significantly strengthen our off-field operation and I would like to personally welcome them to Hillsborough.

“I wish them every success at our club.”

Boucaud delight at call-up

Boucaud delight at call-up

Dagenham midfielder Andre Boucaud has spoken of his delight at being called up by Trinidad & Tobago.

The 29-year-old has made 17 appearances for the Caribbean side so far and is eager to add to that total in the coming weeks.

"Playing international football is huge, whatever nation or country it is," Boucaud told the official club website.

"A couple of months ago we played against Argentina and played against Messi.

"If I didn't play for Trinidad and Tobago, playing international football, I'd never have got that opportunity, so I'm grateful."

The call-up means he will miss two matches for Dagenham but Boucaud insists he is willing to fight for his place when he returns.

"It is always hard missing those games, I'm confident I can come back and prove myself again in training," he added.

We are still three months away from the opening of the January transfer window, but that has not prevented speculation and rumours continuing this week.

Andrea Pirlo is also interesting a high-profile Major League Soccer club, while Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been linked with a return to Manchester United.

But which moves are plausible? Let's take a closer look at the transfer gossip from this week.

Mario Balotelli's track record on the pitch makes him a gamble worth taking for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool

Mario Balotelli's track record on the pitch makes him a gamble worth taking for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool

As Mario Balotelli prepares for his Liverpool debut this weekend at Tottenham, many are questioning the wisdom of Brendan Rodgers gambling on the player. Adam Bate looks at a record that suggests he's worth the risk...
By Adam Bate

When it comes to the art of signing players, few did it better than Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. In the latter’s book With Clough by Taylor he explained some of the science behind it in detailing how Nottingham Forest actively sought to buy players they perceived to have personal problems.

The theory was that this meant their market value might not be in line with their ability – hence the opportunity to snare a bargain. With Liverpool securing the services of Mario Balotelli on a three-year deal for a price of £16million, it’s tempting to conclude Brendan Rodgers is also a believer.

Of course, football is not just about mere talent. It’s Balotelli’s attitude that has many doubting the wisdom of the transfer. “We are certainly losing a great player, but we gain something more in team spirit and hunger,” said AC Milan coach Pippo Inzaghi. Delicate but damning.

Inzaghi’s former international team-mate Christian Vieri wasn’t quite so equivocal in his assessment, describing the transfer as the best piece of business in Milan’s history. Closer to home, former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness has referred to the move as an “enormous gamble” by Rodgers.

“It’s a gamble I don't think he needs to take because he has a very strong group of players,” he told the Sunday Times. “The harmony looks good but he may find, like every previous manager of Balotelli, that he will spend more time talking about him, spending time with him and defending him than he will the rest of the group put together. It's a high-risk signing and I wouldn't want him.”

Ostensibly, it does seem as though Rodgers is a sucker for punishment – a view not exactly quashed by his own one-word assessment of what Balotelli will bring to Liverpool. “Trouble,” Rodgers told the Monday Night Football panel.

With Luis Suarez off the books, the Liverpool manager is taking on another project. Not so much a case of inviting trouble to his Melwood door but paying for the privilege; a peculiar example of Munchausen syndrome by proxy with Rodgers revelling in the role of full-time carer.

But this view does Rodgers a disservice. He appreciates that to take Liverpool to the next level, his responsibility is to identify world-class players at an affordable price. When it comes to the vast potential of Lazar Markovic, it’s a gamble due to a lack of evidence. When it comes to the vast potential of Balotelli, it’s a gamble due to too much evidence.

The question Rodgers will be asking is how much of the Balotelli circus represents background noise that can be ignored. Can he make the difference with a player deemed “unmanageable” by Jose Mourinho? And how much can Balotelli really scupper Liverpool’s momentum?

These are the intangibles. But when it comes to a cold analysis of the on-field evidence, there is plenty to suggest this is a player who can contribute. While Sergio Aguero was the hero and Edin Dzeko remains in favour, it is a curiosity of Manchester City’s title-winning season of 2011/12 that the soon-to-be-discarded Balotelli had the best strike rate of anyone in that campaign.

He scored 13 goals in 1325 minutes of football and bettered that in his first season with Milan, netting 12 times in Serie A in just 1145 minutes. That’s almost goal-a-game territory and was the best strike rate of any player in the country. Even in a largely underwhelming final year with the Rossoneri, Balotelli maintained a respectable level of scoring with 14 goals in 25 league appearances.

The key is extrapolation. The Italian’s career strike rate would see him net 23 goals a season if he played the full 38 games. But is that ever likely to be possible with Balotelli? This is a virtuoso performer rather than one in harmony with the orchestra. Balotelli had more shots than any player in Serie A last season despite missing 13 games. Some found the top corner. Many were ill-advised.

But there are some encouraging signs too. After assisting just one Premier League goal in his time at Manchester City – that pass to Aguero – and none in his first season with Milan, there were six of them last season including three in his final half a dozen appearances.

Time is on his side and improvement is possible. Everyone from Rodgers to the player's own agent Mino Raiola seems to accept that this is his last chance. “Either it works here or it's a bust,” Raiola told Corriere della Sera. “If it goes wrong? Mario is 24. He no longer has the excuse of his age.”

However, another way of looking at this situation is that he’s only 24 years old. That’s younger than Daniel Sturridge. Younger than Jordan Henderson. Younger than Joe Allen, and significantly younger than Adam Lallana. Balotelli will not be expected to carry Liverpool’s hopes as he did at Milan, merely to make a contribution.

“Mario played well for six or seven months, giving a decisive push for them to enter the Champions League,” added Raiola. “But then you could see he is not ready to be a leader. Will he ever be a leader? It's not mandatory that every player has to be a leader.

Not everyone is born to be a leader and a good striker is not always a leader either. Mario needs to get this pressure off his shoulders. He must feel free to score goals and that's it. I sought out for him a team where he can be an important element without being asked to be a leader. Liverpool have Steven Gerrard. There Mario will be protected and can give his best.”

What that new role at Liverpool will involve remains a source of intrigue. There are suggestions that Inzaghi favoured a more traditional number 9 able to lead the line as well as the team, but that’s not necessarily what Rodgers requires. He has that option in Rickie Lambert. He needs someone to replicate the movement of Suarez.

Balotelli is not an obvious mimic, having faced accusations of being too static, but he does like to drift around and that could work well if others can fit around him. The touch map of his last 90 minutes of Premier League action offers hope in that it is perhaps surprisingly similar to that of Suarez’s last Liverpool appearance, suggesting a roaming role that favours the left channel.

The role is there waiting for him, the team environment is in place and he is saddled with neither a huge transfer fee nor unreasonable expectations. This is a player with the goalscoring record and the ability to more than make the transfer work. As Raiola says: “Now it’s up to him.” But when it comes to Mario Balotelli, it seems that can be the hardest part of all to get right.

Oshoala leads the way as individuals recognised

Oshoala leads the way as individuals recognised

After 32 games the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 has come to an end, with Germany overcoming Nigeria to win the trophy for a third time and France sealing third place.
A clutch of individual awards were also handed out on Sunday, none more important than the adidas Golden Ball, presented to the tournament’s most outstanding player. The top three in the race for the award at Canada 2014 was as follows:

adidas Golden Ball: Asisat Oshoala (NGA)

adidas Silver Ball: Griedge Mbock Bathy (FRA)

adidas Bronze Ball: Claire Lavogez (FRA)

Nicknamed Superzee by her appreciative team-mates, Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala owes her accolade to her speed and nose for goal. The free-scoring forward set several records during the competition and ended it as the leading markswoman to also pocket the adidas Golden Boot.

France enjoyed an impressive tournament, a fact reflected by the appearance of captain Griedge Mbock Bathy and No10 Claire Lavogez in the top three. A cornerstone of Gilles Eyquem’s team, centre-back Bathy played in every one of her side’s matches and also showed her attacking prowess, while creative midfielder Claire Lavogez caught the eye with her technique, vision and finishing skills, scoring one of the goals of the tournament against Costa Rica in the group phase.

adidas Golden Boot: Asisat Oshoala (NGA)
adidas Silver Boot: Pauline Bremer (GER)
adidas Bronze Boot: Sara Dabritz (GER)

As well as serving up two assists, the insatiable Oshoala found the back of the net seven times in all, reaching her peak in the semi-final against Korea DPR, when she became only the third player in the history of the competition to score four goals in a single game. Her tournament haul is the most ever by a Nigerian player, taking her past compatriots Desire Oparanozie, Ebere Orji and Cynthia Uwak, each of whom scored five FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup goals.

Germany’s powerful attacking unit was a crucial factor in their third world title in the category, with forward Pauline Bremer leading the way with five goals and six assists and midfielder Sara Dabritz matching her goal tally and also providing two assists.

adidas Golden Glove: Maike Kamper (GER)
Germany custodian Maike Kamper ended the tournament with an impressive save rate of 81 per cent, having made 26 stops in her five appearances. Kamper turned in her best performances in the group opener against USA, the semi-final against France and Sunday’s final, playing an essential part in Die Mannschaft’s successful campaign.

FIFA Fair Play award: Canada
The Canucks proved the perfect hosts. Their exemplary behaviour on the pitch was reflected by the fact they received just three yellow cards and no red cards and committed a mere 35 fouls in their four outings.

FIFA presents this award based on an evaluation carried out by members of FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG), who undertake a detailed analysis of the behaviour of national teams both on and off the pitch. Their aim is to promote sportsmanship among players and coaching staff, as well as among fans attending FIFA tournaments.

THE DAY REPLAYED - It is said that good things come to those who wait, and the patience of Montreal's fans was certainly rewarded handsomely as Canada 2014 reached a dramatic conclusion. In the final, it took 98 minutes to find a winner, but when Lena Petermann popped up with a truly golden goal, Germany were able to celebrate a record-equalling third FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup crown.

It is unlikely that either of the previous two were quite so hard-earned, with the Germans - having survived the competition's 'group of death' - having since gone on to record battling wins against the hosts, France and Nigeria. The Super Falconets were the latest opponents left not only to curse their luck and wayward finishing, but the unquenchable spirit of a nation that continues to make a pleasant habit of winning regardless of the circumstances. If there is consolation to be found in defeat for the Africans, it is that they contributed superbly to the final and the tournament as a whole, and in Asisat Oshoala - winner of the adidas Golden Ball and Golden Shoe - have unearthed a rare gem.

France, meanwhile, rounded off a thoroughly creditable campaign with a 3-2 win over Korea DPR, securing third place amid a rush of second-half goals. There too, fans needed to sit through a goalless first half before the excitement belatedly arrived. But there was ultimately plenty both for them to enjoy and for FIFA.com to chew over in our final Canada 2014 round-up.

Results
Final
Nigeria 0-1 Germany aet
Match for Third Place
Korea DPR 2-3 France

Goal of the day
Korea DPR-France 1-2, Aminata Diallo (66)
When Claire Lavogez slipped a pass to Aminata Diallo wide on the right, crossing seemed to be the France No6's only option. Diallo had other ideas though, and having spied the Korea DPR keeper slightly off her line, sensed glory. What followed was a remarkable 30-yard shot that sailed in from the wing, above the startled Kim Chol-Ok, and clipped the underside of the crossbar before bouncing off the ground and back into the roof of the net.

Memorable moments

Canada's extra time heroines: There was much talk when the FIFA U-20 World Cup returned to Canada of the tournament coming full circle. It certainly brought back memories of the dramatic conclusion to that inaugural 2002 edition, when a tense, dramatic final was settled by a single, decisive goal deep into extra time. However, in the years since, there had not been a single final of any FIFA women's competition decided in the same way. Who could have imagined, therefore, that Canada - 12 years on - would produce another extra-time heroine, with Lena Petermann on this occasion taking on the role occupied by USA's Lindsay Tarpley in 2002?

The joy of three: This was Germany's third U-20 Women's World Cup final in succession, and it ended with them equalling USA's tournament record of three crowns. But this is not the only reason why, for Germans, three is most definitely a magic number. This, after all, was the third trophy to end up in their hands over the past couple of months, following on from the nation's successes in the UEFA European U-19 Championship and, of course, the FIFA World Cup™.

A burden shared: Although attacking midfielder Lavogez emerged as one of the tournament's undisputed stars, France's goalscoring success at Canada 2014 was very much a collective effort. Indeed, when Aissatou Tounkara lobbed home their winner in the 3-2 victory over Korea DPR, she became the ninth different Bleuettes star to find the net since the competition began. Only Nigeria and the North Koreans - with six different scorers - came anywhere close, and the tally left Eyquem's side just one short of the tournament's all-time record. That was set in 2006, ironically by Korea DPR, who stormed to the title in Russia with ten different players getting on the scoresheet along the way.

Bremer the battler: Having run herself into the ground over 98 draining minutes on the massive Olympic Stadium pitch, Pauline Bremer would have been forgiven for not chasing Gladys Obasi into the corner as the left-back prepared to boot the ball clear. But the Germany striker refused to consider the path of conserving energy. That decision to pursue a seemingly lost cause paid off handsomely, with Bremer robbing Obasi of possession, driving to the byline and teeing up Petermann for her title-winning goal.

The stat
0 - There were no red cards shown over the entirety of Canada 2014, establishing this as the first-ever FIFA women's tournament - senior, U-20 or U-17 - to end without a single dismissal. Previously, there had never been fewer than two red cards shown at a U-20 Women's World Cup, and the last edition alone yielded four.

The words
"I will tell my girls to take this defeat hard. We had a great opportunity to win a World Cup with the chances we had in the first half, but we threw that chance away," Peter Dedevbo, Nigeria coach.
