Former champions Brisbane Roar moved clear at the top of Australia's A-League with a 2-1 win over Central Coast Mariners at home.

Brandon Borrello scored both of Roar's goals to make it two wins from two and open up a two-point buffer over title favourites Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC, who are level in second place. It was another encouraging display from John Aloisi's team, who largely controlled proceedings and could have enjoyed a bigger margin of victory had they taken more of their chances.

Besart Berisha denied Melbourne City's stirring comeback in the Melbourne derby, giving champions Melbourne Victory a last-gasp 3-2 win to kick-start their season. The Albanian striker was on hand to tap in Connor Pain's cross during the last minute of regular time, saving Victory's blushes after letting slip a two-goal lead.

Victory were coasting at 2-0 with more than an hour gone, with Fahid Ben Khalfallah's deflected first-half opener and Kosta Barbarouses' header after the break putting the champions on course for a first win of the new season. But City set up a pulsating finish with two goals in three minutes, with the first conjured out of nothing by Uruguayan forward Bruno Fornaroli.

An 89th minute header from skipper Alex Brosque gave Sydney FC a 1-0 win over the Newcastle Jets on Saturday. It took until the final minutes but Wellington Phoenix got a deserved second goal to beat a ten-man Perth Glory 2-1 in Perth. Glory's international signings Guyon Fernandez and Diego Castro again failed to create scoring chances on Sunday, but it still took until the 89th minute for the Phoenix to put the home side away. Vince Lia prodded home the winning goal.

Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers played out a 1-1 draw in Adelaide on Friday with Spaniard Andreu finding the net for both sides.
